I was fortunate enough to be invited to partner Stefania Malmsten on the design and typesetting of the catalog for Cindy Shermans exhibition Untitled Horrors at Astrup Fearnley Museet (Oslo), Moderna Museet (Stockholm) and Kunsthaus Zürich. The catalog is edited and published in four language editions (Norwegian, Swedish, English and German) by Moderna Museet in collaboration with Hatje Cantz Verlag. The catalog contains 232 pages, displaying 135 of Shermans works, ranging from 1975 to present. Accompanying Shermans artworks are texts written by seven renowned authors an poets (Miranda July, Lars Norén, Sara Stridsberg, Sjón, Sibylle Berg, Karl-Ove Knausgaard and Kathy Acker). This aspect lead to our design approach, where we chose to emphasize the texts by clearly separating them from the artwork, and also opting for a more classical approach to the typesetting. The texts are typeset in four different point sizes in a flexible grid system allowing a number of variations in the text block. This also helping us create a varied display of the texts, and a flexibility that could easily cope with the four languages. The images are in general presented uncropped, apart from an image driven introduction that displays eight of Shermans artwork in a larger scale. The catalog cover is printed on 260 gsm Chromocard with reversed flaps, allowing us to convert our idea of separation as the title is printed on another surface than the cover image. The two different sides of the cardboard create a contrast for the front cover, where the title is printed on the uncoated inside, and the cover image is printed on the coated outside, which in addition is varnished. Both cover and content is printed in five colors, using Pantone 431 for all text and negative space.
